Brahms
Waltz
Op. 39, No. 15
This
Brahms waltz is the right answer in our quiz. It’s also one
of the composer’s most beloved melodies. The gently rolling
left hand chords
and the composer’s descriptive marking of dolce (sweet or
sweetly) set the tone for this well-balanced and charming composition.
Decoys
Chopin’s
Op. 33, No. 4 Mazurka, with its amazing B minor melody,
takes a back seat to no other in terms of its beauty and charm.
Schumann’s
Op. 118c sonata also contains a lovely melody in its second movement.
This andante movement, written in 9/8 (compound) time, states the
melody simply for the first eight measures. The next eight bars
incorporate sixteenth
notes and a more complex treatment of melodic material in both
the left and the right hand. The entire movement is quite short
in length.
