When it comes to singing, emotions can run high. Nothing can move an audience to tears faster than a singer or group of singers, especially if they’re tone deaf. However, in this article, we’ll concentrate on performances that move audiences emotionally in a good way.

Writing for the voice is a completely different skill than writing for keyboard, string, woodwind, brass or percussion instruments. Voices generally use a combination of music and lyrics, and knowing how to place lyrics effectively in a melody line is a skill within itself.

I have found consultations with choral conductors to be invaluable in honing my lyric writing skills. Even if I am using a pre-existing text, asking a specialized conductor for advice is as useful as consulting with a skilled violinist when seeking bowing advice.

Listening to great choral works is another way of assimilating choral writing skills. Besides that, this genre has some of the most beautiful repertoire imaginable. Check out some of the select recordings below.
