Claudio Monteverdi and
the World of Madrigals
Monteverdi
was born in Cremona in 1567 and died in Venice in 1643. This Italian
composer
already had a few of his madrigals published at sixteen. At that
age, he was also considered to be a first rate viol player and organist.
La
favola d’Orfeo was Monteverdi’s first opera, produced
in 1607. As for his madrigals, he wrote them over a forty year period.
Claudio was a master of polyphony, melody and harmonic boldness.
He wrote, among other things, operas, ballets, sacred and secular
music. His most famous works include Vespers (1610) and L’incoronazione
di Poppea (1642).
An
Amazing Monteverdi Fact
Monteverdi
worked within each music genre of his time and improved them through
his vast talent and imagination. He was not revolutionary, but a
genius nonetheless.
