Dominant Chords
Get the Job Done

Many people feel like they’ve done a job well when they’ve:

• had a satisfying day at the office;

• just made the last payment on their mortgage;

• had the last effective word in an argument;

• pocketed lost cash on the street, because nobody was around for miles and miles and miles;

• completed a composition with a satisfying dominant seventh to tonic cadence.

Now obviously the last bullet point is the most important on the list. Well, it is more important than having the last word in an argument! That’s my argument anyway! So there!

Here is a list of three dominant seventh chords and their keys of origin. These chords are constructed on the fifth degree (note) of a major or a minor scale. They are an important part of harmonic vocabulary throughout many eras including jazz.
