Norwegian Composer
Edvard Grieg
Grieg
was born in Bergen in 1843 and died there as well in 1907. He was
a Norwegian composer, pianist and conductor.
He began his studies playing the piano with his mother, before continuing
his musical education at the Leipzig Conservatory.
In
1867, he married his cousin Nina Hagerup, a soprano who inspired
and interpreted many of his songs. Grieg had many famous friends,
including Percy Grainger and Frederick Delius, and admirers such
as Liszt. He was also well liked and respected internationally.
Some
of Grieg’s more famous works include Peer Gynt (1888), his
Piano
Concerto, Opus 16 (1868) and his Holberg Suite, Opus 40 (1884).
An
Amazing Grieg Fact
Grieg
received honorary doctorates from both Oxford (1906) and Cambridge
(1894). Don’t we all wish we had that on our resumes!
