Energetic Edward Elgar
Elgar
was born in Lower Broadheath, Worcester in 1857 and died in Worcester
in 1934. Although Elgar’s father wanted to send his son to
the Leipzig Conservatory, this option proved financially difficult,
so Elgar worked for his father and also worked as an assistant organist.
This eventually led to other jobs, including playing the violin
with several orchestras and forming various chamber
music groups.
One
of Elgar’s huge successes came in London in 1899, with his
Variations on an Original Theme (Enigma). From 1901 until about
1914, the composer was at his best, writing one hit after another
including two symphonies and a violin concerto.
An Amazing Elgar Fact
Elgar
was a pioneer in realizing the power of gramophone recordings. He
made many recordings of his works, one of which featured Menuhin
playing his violin concerto.
