Gustav Holst
and The Planets
Holst
was born in Cheltenham in 1874 and died in London in 1934. The English
composer was trained in piano by his father and eventually became
an organist at Wyck Rissington, Gloucestershire in 1892. In his
studies at the Royal College of Music, his teachers were Stanford
(composition) and Hoyte (organ). In his college days, he became
good friends with Vaughan Williams.
Holst
had remarkable technical flair for composing. He was intrigued by
English folksong and past composers like Weelkes and Byrd. He was
also a sought after first rate teacher. Today, one of his most popular
works is his Planets suite.
An
Amazing Holst Fact
Holst
was a man of many talents. From 1898 to 1903, he worked as a trombonist
for the Carl Rosa Opera and Scottish Orchestra.
