Harp Songs Soothe
Harp
songs can melt away modern-day tensions within seconds. Where did
this soothing and unique instrument come from and how does it work?
We certainly don’t want to add more tension to your day by
withholding these answers, so here they are.
The
modern harp originated from either the angular or the bow harp.
The latter was first seen in Asia around 3,000 BC. Egyptian harps
came on the scene around the time of the Fourth Dynasty. As for
the angular harp, it is estimated to have been around since 2,000
BC.
The
modern orchestral harp has seven pedals, with each pedal having
two notches that change a string’s pitch. A semitone
or tone pitch change in the string can be achieved by depressing
a pedal to its first or second notch respectively.
Berlioz
gets credit for first using the harp in his Symphonie Fantastique
of 1830. As for the modern electric harp, it was first brought to
light in 1964 by Lloyd Lindroth.
