Ingenious Igor Stravinsky
Stravinsky
was born in Dranienbaum in 1882 and died in New York in 1971. Igor
was a Russian-born composer,
conductor, writer and pianist. In 1901, he attended St. Petersburg
University with the intent of studying law, but gradually he turned
his attention to music. He eventually became Rimsky-Korsakov’s
student in 1903.
The
premiere of Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite (1911) made him
world famous. Petrushka (1911) and The Rite of Spring (1913) further
helped in solidifying his status as a leading figure in avant-garde
music.
Rhythmic
innovation was and still is an important aspect in Stravinsky’s
style. He wrote for many genres and was not afraid to experiment
and incorporate different styles of writing, such as surrealism,
into his compositions.
