Master Orchestrator
Maurice Ravel
Ravel
was born in Ciboure in 1875 and died in Paris in 1937. This French
composer and pianist spent sixteen years studying at the Paris Conservatory
under the guidance of Fauré (composition) and Bériot
(piano).
Some
of Ravel’s masterpieces include Shéhérazade
(1903, for voice and orchestra), Miroirs (1905, for piano), Daphnis
et Chloé (1909-1911, for ballet), Boléro (1928, also
a ballet) and his Piano Concerto for Left Hand (1931).
Ravel
combined classical form with dance rhythms, bitonality, jazz influences
and impressionist harmonies. He was also a master of orchestration,
as demonstrated in his 1922 treatment of Mussorgsky’s Pictures
at an Exhibition.
An
Amazing Ravel Fact
Ravel
preferred to write small scale works. His longest work is Daphnis
et Chloé, which usually runs for just under an hour.
