Music Eras
Offer Perspective
If you’re one that is seeking order in
a world of absolute insanity, then music eras offer a nice neat
way of categorizing the history
of music. Of course, knowledge of eras may not give you the
order that you so desire in your life, but at least you’ll
be a more thoughtful and knowledgeable musician.
Music eras are often divided into the following categories:
•
Medieval (500-1400)
• Renaissance (1400-1600)
• Baroque (1600-1750)
• Classical (1750-1830)
• Romantic (1830-1900)
• Twentieth Century (1900-present)
The dates are approximate, but commonly agreed upon. As for what
happened within these eras, the terminology used for categorizing
music styles becomes rather extensive. Consider, for example, the
last above mentioned era. In the twentieth century alone, the amount
of different genres of music is mind boggling. Jazz, pop and rock
music have so many different styles and categories that describe
their particular types of music.
