Mezmerizing Music
of Olivier Messiaen
Messiaen
was born in Avignon in 1908 and died in Clichy (near Paris) in 1992.
He was a French composer, organist and teacher. Messiaen did a lot
of research and studying. His Paris Conservatory term (1919-1930)
involved receiving lessons from Dupré, Dukas and Caussade.
He also independently took down by dictation bird songs from French
birds of different regions.
Appointments
included organist of L’ Église de la Trinité
(1931 in Paris), teaching at the École Normale de Musique
and Schola Cantorum (1936), and teaching at the Paris Conservatory
(1942).
Religion
and love of nature were fuel for inspiration in Messiaen’s
compositions. Chromatic harmony and irregular meters
are historically important characteristics of this composer’s
original and highly influential music.
