Composing
arithmetic 101: piano + composer = happy composer
I
know, the answer is really piano composer, but that doesn’t
emphasize my point, which is: life is a lot easier (and happier)
for most composers and arrangers when a good piano or keyboard is
readily available. Piano skills and a good instrument are a huge
plus in recognizing and bringing out the composer in you.
As
a composer, I generally recommend that you have, as a minimum, a
full size weighted keyboard or electric piano in your household.
If your budget and living space can accommodate an acoustic piano,
that’s all the better.
Semi-weighted
keyboards are acceptable for composing, but they tend to be more
difficult to control in terms of note accuracy and sound. Also,
if you are composing a fast and vivacious piano work, a fully-weighted
action is far more useful, especially if you are at a high level
of piano technical proficiency.
