Well-Read
Robert Schumann
Schumann
was born in Zwickau in 1810 and died in Endenich in 1856. He was
a German composer, critic, conductor and pianist. Although Schumann’s
interests lay mainly in the music world, he did study law at two
universities (Leipzig and Heidelberg).
In
1828, he met his future wife, Clara Wieck. Clara was not only an
inspiration for Schumann, but a premiere interpreter and promoter
of his compositions, as she was a first rate pianist (and an excellent
composer).
Schumann
incorporated classical structure into his romantic style. Presently,
his piano
works are considered poetic, and his chamber
music is recognized as first rate. Although his orchestration
is occasionally labeled as thick, it has not diminished the popularity
of his orchestral works and concertos. Included among his masterpieces
is his Piano Concerto in A minor (1845).
An
Amazing Schumann Fact
Clara’s
devoted love was not enough in preventing an ailing Robert Schumann
from an attempted suicide. His last two unfortunate years were in
an asylum.
