Sontsovka's Stupendous Sergey Prokofiev
Prokofiev
was born in Sontsovka in 1891 and died in Moscow in 1953. This Russian
composer was engaged in piano
lessons at the age of three and had composed his own opera by
the age of nine!
Prior
to entering the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1904, he was taught
by Glière (1902). During his conservatory studies, Sergey
was taught orchestration by Rimsky-Korsakov.
Some
early highlights in Prokofiev’s life included meeting and
being commissioned by Diaghilev (1914), the completion of his first
symphony (1917) and departing to the United States (1918).
Prokofiev’s
music style is still unique in many ways including his use of wit,
harmonic innovation and melodic flair. Two of his most popular works
today are his ballet, Romeo and Juliet (1935) and Peter and the
Wolf (1936).
An
Amazing Prokofiev Fact
Prokofiev’s
death was overshadowed by the passing of Josef Stalin. They both
died on March 5th, 1953.
