This
Sonata
Movement is Glorious
Haydn Sonata Hob: XVI: 52
(Second Movement)
This
correct response in our test is a beautiful sonata movement marked
adagio. Although Haydn wrote the outer movements of this 1794 piano
sonata in the key of Eb major, he chose the distant key of E major
for this slow movement. This adagio is highly decorative and wonderfully
expressive.
Decoys
The
second movement of Mozart’s KV 283 is marked as andante. As
for Beethoven’s Op. 14, No. 1, it has a middle allegretto
movement that is in the tonic minor key of E minor. Eventually,
using E as a pivot note, Beethoven modulates into C major and uses
a predominantly quarter note rhythm
as a contrast to preceding material.
