"A
Tip Top Piano Concerto that is Truly a Shipshape Work!"
This
downloadable two piano score is twenty-two minutes of passionate
drive and memorable melodies.
My
Piano Concerto had a debut date of June 19, 2011, featuring
myself as soloist and guest artist with the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber
Orchestra. The following are midi audio representations of this
work:
1. Movement One (9:53)
2. Movement Two (5:50)
3. Movement Three (5:44)
The
entire work's length is about 22 minutes. The movement that has
the most traditional structure is the third. It is a march in Rondo
form and has remnants of the first and second movement's material,
along with its own main melody. The first two movements are more
loosely structured.
This
two-piano version of the score contains the original solo piano
part and a transcription of the full (conductor's) score’s
orchestral instruments. The result is a two-piano version of the
score that can be used either for rehearsal purposes or in a concert
venue where a second piano, rather than an orchestra, is available.
As
with many transcriptions, much of the original integrity of the
orchestral accompaniment has been preserved in the second piano
part. This particular two piano score was written by yours truly
(the actual composer), thus ensuring that all of the important melodic
material and/or harmony has been duplicated in the second piano
part.
The
mp3s that are part of this download feature the orchestral version
of the work, so that the solo pianist has a better sense of the
way in which this piano concerto was originally conceived in my
head. The orchestral mp3s can also be used as an interpreting vehicle
for the second piano player.

Biography
Canadian
composer Daniel E. Friedman began studying piano at the age of
seven. After numerous successes in festivals and competitions,
he completed his performer's diploma and teacher's examinations
in his four years at the Royal College of Music, under the guidance
of the late Sir Kendall Taylor. His studies in England were followed
by Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music from Queen's University
(Canada) and the Peabody Institute (U.S.A.) respectively.
Mr.
Friedman has composed extensively for orchestras, chamber ensembles
and soloists. In the latter capacity, he wrote twenty-four preludes,
all in different keys and many of them premiered at Toronto's
St. Lawrence Centre in April of 1990. The works have been performed
often since. His Piano Concerto's first movement was first premiered
in 1996 by the Northumberland Symphony. A more recent debut of
the entire work was in June of 2011, with the Kitchener-Waterloo
Chamber Academy and Mr. Friedman as the guest soloist.
Friedman's
first short film score was for a movie entitled Harry Weinberg's
Notebook. In February 1991, Maestro Kerry Stratton premiered
Mr. Friedman's first orchestral work entitled Overture
with the North York Symphony Orchestra. Since then, his orchestral
works have been played across Canada by many orchestras including
the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Symphony New Brunswick, Okanagan
Symphony, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and many more.

Program Notes
Daniel
E. Friedman's E minor Piano Concerto was influenced,
as much of his music is, by older Israeli folk songs, the passionate
music of Beethoven and the graceful elements of Chopin’s
writing. His Piano Concerto was completed in the autumn of 1996.
Movement
one is filled with passion and a relentless drive, while the charm
of the second movement is reflective of the influence of Chopin.
As for the third movement (a march), Mr. Friedman was inspired
by the many Israeli march themes that he was exposed to in his
younger years.
Although
balance and detail are key to Mr. Friedman's compositions, his
initial drafts are spontaneous and from the heart, with painstaking
polishing and detail coming later. His number one challenge in
composing is creating a balance between music that has audience
accessibility and uncompromising artistic integrity. His constant
inspirations are his family and close friends.
